2019_06.11 Tree Board MinutesTree Board Minutes REGULAR MEETING June 11, 2019 CITY HALL COUNCIL CHAMBERS, 405 MUNICIPAL DRIVE I. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Michael Chandler called the meeting to order at 6:36 pm. II. ROLL CALL Present: Michael Chandler, Linda Miller, Cesar Guerra, Wilda Turner, Kenneth Michels Absent: Darlene Winters, Vinita Thomas, Lauren Warn, Laurie Sanders III. VISITOR/CITIZENS FORUM IV. REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS A. L. Hoover updated the board about the activities going on with the new Magnolia Hills neighborhood development. Unfortunately the Park development fees were waived for the Magnolia Hills development so the roughly $100,000 that he had anticipated receiving from the developers would not be collected. Instead the developers will include several green spaces within the development. V. MINUTES APPROVAL Consider approval of minutes from May 7, 2019 regular meeting. Motion to: Approve the minutes from the May 7, 2019 regular meeting. Action: Approve. Moved By: W. Turner Seconded: K. Michels Motion Passed Unanimously VI. DECISION ITEMS A. Tree City USA requirements 1. L. Hoover stated that R. Taylor will be completing the Annual Work Plan report. This report can then be presented to the board for review. 2. L. Hoover requested that board members review the email from Courtney Blevins and determine how they would like to proceed with the street tree inventory. This will be decided at the next meeting. B. Discuss and consider hosting Tree care educational event 1. R. Taylor stated that Ryan the arborist with Treehugger is prepared to provide whatever type educational event the board is interested in having. He loves doing these types of events. He just needs about a month notice so that he can fit it in his schedule. W. Turner stated that she wasn't sure how many people the board would be able to attract to the event if they had it during a regular meeting time like they have been having the Master Gardener's events. C. Guerra stated that it might be a good idea to have another speaker as well to draw in a larger crowd. L. Hoover asked what the board thought about scheduling the Tree care educational event along with the Arbor Day Tree planting and City Cleanup events. M. Chandler stated that he thought this would be a good idea. M. Goza asked what would be the timing if having all three events on the same day. M. Chandler stated that the educational event and tree planting would take place early and then the board members would go to the City Cleanup event later around 10 am or so. Maybe have one or two board members at the Cleanup earlier, handing out informational fliers about KKB. The Cleanup event typically runs from 8 am to noon but the KKB didn't necessarily need to be there for the entire time. M. Chandler asked what topic Ryan would be speaking on. R. Taylor stated Ryan could supply the topic or the board could suggest a topic, Ryan was fine with it either way. L. Hoover stated he thought it would be good to suggest that Ryan speak about anything and everything that would help people to grow better trees whether it is maintenance, planting, watering, selection, or even online resources of information. C. Discuss and consider Tree Campus K-12 program 1. The board decided to replace one of the dead City trees. Possibly in one of the street medians, this year for Arbor Day rather than collaborating with one of the school campuses. VII. ADJOURNMENT Motion to: Adjourn meeting at 6:58. pm Action: Adjourn. Moved By: W. Turner Approved: curie Sanders, Vice Chairman Attest: Mary Goza, Tree Board Secretary
