Agenda Item No: REGULAR ITEMS - B.
I. Subject:
Discuss and approve action necessary regarding any of the upcoming events:
October Bring It Event
Butterfly Demonstration Garden
Arbor Day Event
Monarch Migration Program
II. Originated by:
III. Summary:
This item is presented as an opportunity for the Board to discuss and take any appropriate action on
any of the events or projects listed:
October Bring It Event- The Bring It event is scheduled for October 22, 2016. The banners have been
ordered and will be placed by Public Works in four locations (Sublet Road median, Town Center by the
Parkway, Sonora Park, and Little School Road close to the entrance sign). Flyers will also be made
and available for posting at the Library, City Hall, website and information has been placed in the City
Newsletter.
An outline of the event site is available for discussion. All vendors have confirmed attendance. We
will need volunteers for the event, and I believe the boy scouts have committed to attend.
The city will also be hosting the Take It event which is the Citywide Clean-up for brush, tires, and
bulky items. These items will be received at the landfill on Dick Price Road from the hours of 8:00
a.m. to Noon. In addition, the Police Department will be collecting prescription drugs from 10:00 a.m.
to 2:00 p.m.
Later on this same date will be the Trunk or Treat, starts at 5:00 p.m. This might be an opportunity for
us to participate in handing out trees should we receive them in time. We may want to also provide
information about the committee, the Monarch program and candy for the kids. We can discuss our
participation at our October meeting.
Butterfly Demonstration Garden - Any updates or planned workdays to discuss
Arbor Day Event- This is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th. I have asked LaCresha to see if
Patterson or any of the schools would like to participate in planting a tree but have not heard back as
of yet. I talked with the Fire Chief and although he likes trees he declined to have on planted at the
fire station because of limited irrigation. Have we confirmed that a tree will be donated?
Monarch Migration Program - We talked about asking Kara to do a program inviting participants who
put in gardens. We need to select a date and ask each person to provide pictures of their garden for a
slide show.

Agenda Item No: REGULAR ITEMS - C.
I. Subject:
Consider action necessary for participation in National Planting Day in 2017
II. Originated by:
III. Summary:
The board has received information from Keep America Beautiful regarding National Planting Day.
This is the first Saturday after Labor Day and supports community based activities through out the
month that focus on increasing the number of native trees in public spaces, bringing natural beauty
and sustainable urban infrastructure to "built environments" and create community-supported
sustainable vegetable and fruit gardens, and restoring vacant lots with low-maintenance indigenous
plants and trees.
The 2016 focus is on promoting the health of honey bees and other pollinators. Staff recommends
that if the Board is open to participating next year, a plan should be developed identifying a property or
properties to plant and encouraging participation from the community.
