Information Regarding Kennedale Property Where Sonora Park Is Now
Located
As Written By Larry W. Fjeniken Who Resided On The Property When
The Property Was Known As " Fleniken's Tanks„
We moved to Kennedale during the summer of 1963, before I entered the 7th grade. The house we
moved into was across the RR tracks on New Hope Rd. As I recall it was approximatley 52 acres that
was bordered New Hope Road on the south, the RR track by a dirt road. I believe this road leads to a
sports field(s)now. There were two large stock tanks or tanks separated by a dam, more on this
later. There was a large barn adjacent to the dam and next to the RR track.
The barn appeared to have been a working dairy at one time, complete with concrete floors, wooden
stanchions and feed trays to keep the cows amused while taking their milk. I'm guessing you could have
milked 30 to 40 cows at the same time. We actually had a couple of cows and there was a time when
one of my chores was to milk both cows. Part was used for drinking, cooking and the like and the
remainder was used to make our own butter. The good ole days. Back then you could go down to the
stockyards and buy day old calves for a couple of bucks. We would hand raise the calves for resale or to
grace our table.
We lived in a two bedroom frame house just off New Hope Road that I'm guessing was built in the 30s or
40s. Behind and closer to the RR track was a small carriage house. Next to the carriage house was a
non-functional outhouse. The unique thing about this outhouse were the initials WPA and a date
scratched into the cement while it was still wet. About 30 yards beyond the house and before the tank
was a pig pen and hen house, also my chores, but I'm not whining, I was and remain very fond of bacon
and eggs.
My fondest memories are the countless hours spent in and around the tanks with friends, (I wish i had a
nickel for everytime I've had to explain what a stock tank is to people who have never lived in
Texas!). There was always plenty of fun things to do any time of the year, hunting, fishing, horseback
riding. But the best time of the year was summer.
I mentioned the dam between the two tanks and that's where we spent most of our time during
the summer. There was a very old and very large willow tree that had fallen into the tank and continued
to grow with it's trunk parallel to the top of the water. My buddies and I out limbs and cleared shrubs until
we converted the tree into a diving platform with the higher limbs used as a diving board. We would
spend hours swimming, playing, talking and the occasional cigarette break. The play usually turned into
a game we called appropriately"dunkem". We would choose teams and try to dunk the members of the
other team. One team would guard the homebase, (tree trunk), and the other team's mission was to get
to base without being dunked. I'm pretty sure I swallowed about fifty gallons of tank water over the
years. The best was Rusty Boyd, he could swim forever with nothing but his eyes exposed and when he
caught you, you were going under.
On the east side of the front tank was an island that ran about one third of the way across the tank. It
was completely covered in cattails and inhabited by frogs, turtles and red-winged blackbirds, hundreds of 1
them.
The second tank was much more shallow than the front tank and there was really only one area deep
enough for water activities. There really wasn't a suitable tree for a diving platform so we had to
improvise. Someone came up with a great idea to erect an early version of what they now call a Zip
Line. So we cleared off two trees on the back and side of the tank to hold the line. We took turns
swimming one end of the wire cable across the tank and secured it to each tree. We fed the line thru a 3
to 4 foot pipe and that's what we used to hold onto as we slid from one side to the next. There was rope
on the cable that hung down to the water and that was how you returned the"handle"to the next guy in
y
f f
line by slinging it back. And at the right time of year we would feast on the Mulberry trees growing on the
perimeter of the tank, life was good. Gorge yourself on Mulberries, throw what you couldn't eat at a
buddy, paint yourself purple and jump in the tank and wash it off.
Behind the back tank was a small field, maybe ten acres which ended in a treeline. Just beyond the
treeline was a small, seasonal stream that fed into Village Creek. The small stream had a pronounced
sand bar that was a great place to camp out. It was an area nestled in tall trees alongside a sometime
babbling brook. The kinda place we pay big bucks to visit now. That was where I learned to drink my
coffee black. A couple of us went camping one night, built a campfire and brewed some hobo
coffee. When I asked who brought the coffeemate, I was severly rebuked by my fellow campers and my
manhood was questioned. I've taken my coffee black ever since.
Once you cross the creek you would walk another 50 yards and come to another pretty good size field. I
think this is close to the current sports complex I mentioned earlier.
There were two types of fish as I recall, perch and catfish. To fish for the perch you walked thru
pasture and collected unsuspecting grasshoppers. For catfish,we'd go to Buddies Grocery Store and
buy 25 cents worth of calf liver and fish all night long. We had a couple of different ways to make our
spending money for essentials, like cigarettes, cokes, fish bait, ammo for my.22 cal single shot rifle. One
way we made money in the summer time was unloading trucks packed with watermelons. I'm not going
to mention anything else, as I'm not sure the statue of limitations has expired.
Well this is some of the highlights I recall about living in Kennedale, I intentionally left out all the lowlights
to protect the guilty. This has been a wonderful exercise thinking back on the time and place I grew
up. You felt safe, didn't think twice about walking to the store by yourself, I don't think the doors ors the
house had locks, if it did, it was a latch on the screen door, it was just a wonderful time and place to
live. You got up in the morning, knew what you had to do. You don't dare get caught sitting around the
house, because if you did, someone would put you to work. So you stayed outside all day playing as long
as you were in the house when the street lights came on. I wouldn't change a thing even if I could. I wish
more young people today were exposed to that lifestyle. The nation would be in a better place.

just caught this 50 pound Carp from Fleniken's Tanks in 2002. He had taken his grand kids fishing and
they were horrified of it and ran from it!1 Mr. Irwin put it into the back of his pick up and took it down to
Mansfield, when a man with a large family bought it from him for$5.00.The man fed his family for
several meals and Mr. Irwin bought gas with the$5.00. ! love this FISH Story, don't y'all?Only this one

This first Wednesday in January, Gayle e Power and I will be speaking before the Parks Board at the
city of Kennedale. We will present a suggestion to name the island at Sonora Park"Fleniken's
Island" after Larry Fleniken's and his family who lived on that land where the park is now located
back in the 60's & 70's. The land itself holds special memories for boys growing up roaming the
woods and hunting there. The two stock tanks hold memories for so many boys and girls alike,

friends and have fun. If you would like to see this island named "Fleniken's Island", having a sign on
the island and one in the park telling the Fleniken's Family history, please comment below telling the
members of the Park Board why this would be important to you. We will print this and submit it with
our request to name the island. The Kennedaie Alumni is a close knit group made up of many
decades of KHS Wildcats/Kats who for the most part share the same memories! Let's pull together
and get this done!

Gate Rawer Laurie,it is"Larry Fleniken(class of 9989). [got to my vehicle tonight after attending a concert, pull out
my telephone and have a message from my daughter that she saw on the Kennedale Alum page that I would be
speaking to the Parks Board. I did not know what in the world she was talking about:Ha Ha-she sent me the link. I
know we spoke about your idea last night via FB. I would be honored to speak with you to request this honor for him.
I called hire last night. He was quite shocked and I think felt honored. I asked if he would type up everything he
remembered about the property, and his memories of living there and times at the tank. His wife, my twin has been
frying to get him to get this all down on paper for some time. He started talking about some memories of renting the
property for$50.00 and walking to Buddies to buy bullets for his 22 gun and then sitting on the bank of the tank and
shooting snakes and turtles. My how times were different then. Can you imagine a young teenage boy buying bullets
this-day and time?He is quite the storyteller with such an eloquent way with words, I can't wait to read his write-up.
Did you take the photograph Laurie? It is a fabulous photo, it would make a beautiful painting. I love the reflection of
the trees in the water. I will inform Larry of the date the information will be presented. I have always enjoyed hearing
his stories about the times at the tank, along with my husband's memories--but, it really is fun to read everyone
else's memories as well.Sounds like the tank was enjoyed from kids from Larry's era,as well as other generations of
Kennedale kids.

Information Regarding Kennedale Property
Were Sonora Park is Now Located
Information given by:
Patsy Adams, Glenda Adams Pruitt, Wayne Richardson
Mrs. Bill and Mr. Edward Adams leased the 52 acres that is now known as Sonora Park
for $40.00 a month from owner Z. Boaz. There they raised their family and raised hogs
and chickens. Mr. Boaz wanted to keep the land a private property, requesting that the
Adam's family only have a few friends at a time there to visit and enjoy the land.
Bill was of Cherokee and Dutch herritage, she and husband Edward, had several
children, all boys.
George Edwin Adams
James Alvin Adams (born in the farm house)
Dale Ray Adams
Donald Adams
Roy Jay Adams
Donald as a toddler was playing in the yard with his brothers and became hot and
thirsty and ran into the house to get a drink. Mrs. Adams, who was always cleaning their
small farm, had been cleaning something with a bowl of Red Devil Lye, little Donald saw
the bowl and mistook it for a cool drink, and before anyone knew what he was doing, he
drank the lye.
Bill was the only adult at the house with the younger kids who were not big enough to
help with the farm. She ran to the farm bell and rang it furiously until Edward and the
older boys came running back to the house to see what was wrong.
Edward and Bill loaded little Donald into the family vehicle and drove frantically down to
Mansfield, to Dr. Thomas' office. There he treated his throat, esophagus and stomach
as well as they could in those days.
Little Donald suffered with problems for the rest his young life as a result of this
accident. When he was 6 years old, he developed pneumonia and passed away.
The family is gathering more info from the older sons soon to add to this.

The City of Kennedale acquired the land in 1976.
Here is the chain of ownership for the tracts before the City of Kennedale
acquired it.
• Conveyed to City of Kennedale by Warranty Deed on April 16, 1976.
• Conveyed to Ernest O. Boaz by Quit Claim Deed on January 1, 1957.
• Conveyed to Wallace P. Boaz on May 1 , 1940
• Conveyed to Clement A. Boaz et al on March 20, 1930.
The Boaz family owned the land from at least 1930 until the city bought it in 1976.
