A RESOLUTION URGING THE TARRANT COUNTY LEGISLATIVE
DELEGATION TO SUPPORT AN EXPANDED STATEMENT OF THE
ROLE AND SCOPE FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT
ARLINGTON TO RECOGNIZE THE UNIVERSITY'S SUBSTANTIAL
EXISTING RESEARCH FOCUS AND EMERGING POTENTIAL
WHEREAS, the University of Texas at Arlington is a corner -
stone of publicly supported higher education in
north Texas; and
WHEREAS, the University of Texas at Arlington has developed
a number of substantial programs in research,
tripling its research expenditures over the last
four years; and
WHEREAS, research expenditures for 1987 are projected to
exceed $6,000,000; and
WHEREAS, the University of Texas at Arlington currently has
the third largest engineering school in Texas; and
WHEREAS, the University of Texas at Arlington has authority
to offer fifty -three master's and eighteen doctoral
degree programs; and
WHEREAS, the University of Texas at Arlington has already
developed strong, recognized engineering research
programs in advanced robotics, advanced electron
devices, computational fluid dynamics, energy
systems, and has developed strong scientific
research programs in polymers, surface chemistry,
membrane technology, synthetics, positron physics,
and mathematics and is currently recognized as the
number one engineering school on Texas; and
WHEREAS, the University of Texas at Arlington has received
strong financial support from both the public and
private sectors as evidenced by its rapidly expand-
ing research programs; and
WHEREAS, in order to continue to serve and foster the
economic development of Arlington and north Texas,
it is imperative that the University of Texas at
Arlington be recognized and encouraged to realize
its full potential as a research institution able
to offer a full array of undergraduate, master's,
doctoral and special professionalidegrees, rather
than be limited to undergraduate and master's
degree programs and some doctoral programs meeting
unique needs of the local area;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF KENNEDALE, TEXAS:
That the City Council hereby strongly urges the Tarrant
County Legislative Delegation to recognize the University of
Texas at Arlington's substantial existing research focus and
emerging potential by supporting an expanded statement of
the role and scope for the University of Texas at Arlington
and such statement of role and scope include:
I. a. A recognition that the University of Texas at
Arlington is authorized to offer a broad array
of undergraduate, master's, doctoral and special
professional degrees;
b. Emphasis on excellence in teaching and research;
and
C. A recognition that research endeavors benefiting
the academic strength of the University and the
economic strength of the State of Texas shall be
conducted with emphasis on achieving status as a
national research university.
II. That the City Secretary shall cause a certified copy of
this resolution to be sent to each member of the Tarrant
County Legislative Delegation after its passage.
PASSED IN OPEN SESSION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
KENNEDALE, TEXAS, this the 17th day of March, 1987.
