02/12/1998, Public Hearing Meeting MinutesMINUTES OF KENNEDALE CITY COUNCIL PUBLIC HEARING -FEBRUARY 12, 1998 100 E. BROADWAY ST. -COMMUNITY CENTER Mayor Mundy called the public hearing to order at 7:34 p.m. 2260 Members present were Mayor Mundy, Councilmen Wright, Barrett, Boone and Kovach. Councilman Steeno was absent. Staff present were David Geeslin, Kathy Turner, Michael Box, Thad Chambers, Linda Royster, Lynette Whidden, Mort Whetterling, and legal counsel, Wayne K. Olson. Prior to the public hearing, Mayor Mundy presented Proclamations to each of the Home Rule Charter Commission members for their efforts in obtaining Home Rule status. In addition, Mayor Mundy presented John Clark with a plaque for his role in chairing the commission on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Kennedale. Public Hearing - To receive citizen's input on granting a tax abatement for U.S. Galvanizing Haskin, Wallace, Mason Property Management L.L.P., located at 1600 Gilman Road, Kennedale, Texas. Before seeking public input, Mayor Mundy advised Council that in 1993 a reinvestment zone was established in the FWT, Inc., Addition which granted aten-year abatement level at one hundred percent (100%). With this in mind, he stipulated by law that all future companies qualifying for an abatement in this area would be granted the same amount of abatement. Mr. Russell Wallace, President of U.S. Galvanizing was present and introduced Greg Haskins and Jim Mason, partners in the galvanizing business. Mr. Wallace gave a brief history of the U.S. Galvanizing business and the need for expansion. In addition, he said that the new facility in Kennedale would be one of the largest facilities ever constructed and was looking forward to the operation of it along with the current plant in Hurst. Mr. John Berry, Mr. Bill Abbott and Mr. Steve Radakovich, all of which are residents of Kennedale spoke in opposition to granting a tax abatement for U.S. Galvanizing. Taxes, insurance rates, water lines, previous abatements, other businesses relocating to Kennedale, and quality of businesses versus quantity of businesses were citings against the abatement issue.
