Dr. Wise, former acting chairman of anatomy at the University of Miami School of Medicine, has held ma- jor grants from the ration- al Institutes of health to study sickled cells and aged red blood cell mem- branes. The Colorado native says his research has :found that the membranes around the red blood cells of a person with sickle cell anemia are "stickier" than normal, enabling the cells to ad- here to the lining of blood vessels and block the ,flow of other red blood cells carrying oxygen to various parts of the body. "In the past, we thought it was the sickle shape of the cells that was the problem, that the shape I aU 3 U.11 gf R. E;F a evented the cells from flowing smoothly so that they blocked the vessel," he said. "Apparently the shape has nothing to do with it. We have found that the normally shaped cells in a sickle cell patient are sticky, too." , And apparently the stick- ier the cells the more severe the disease. Red blood cells in patients with severe forms of sickle cell anemia are much more ad- herent than those in person with milder forms of the disease. Sickle cell anemia is a hereditary disease that oc- curs almost exclusively in blacks. It strikes one in 500 black Americans, and one black American in 12 will be a carrier. Depending on where it is, the blockage of small blood vessels by the diseased cells leads to swelling and pain in joints, severe pain in the abdo- men, stroke or even death. Dr. Wise is searching for the reason that sickle cells QEU U r ,_ City of Kennedale City of Kennedale are more adherent. He suspects the change in the cellular membrane is cau- sed by a mutation in the hemoglobin, the oxygen carrier in the red blood cell. Hemoglobin is a pro- tein made of long chains of amino acids. A single change takes place in a chain ( "an amino acid called valine is substituted for glutamic acid," Dr. Wise said). And the nor- mally liquid hemoglobin becomes a gel under low oxygen tension, distorting the shape of the cell. The new TCOM chairman said that the abnormal shape of the hemoglobin within the mo tion of cell m reason he ex that th protein bind t blood v *-Voodwill SE_h1Ag_ohks Dona Samuel R. All sA n; r i invit to a prevented the cells from flowing smoothly so that they blocked the vessel," he said. "Apparently the shape has nothing to do with it. We have found that the normally shaped cells in a sickle cell patient are sticky, too." And apparently the stick ier the cells the more severe the disease. Red . blood cells in patients with severe forms of sickle cell anemia are much more ad- herent than those in person with milder forms of the disease. Dr. Wise is searching for the reason that sickle cells e 1' .4 1 MMATU R ,.., M. mli are more adherent. The new TC ®M chairman said that the abnormal shape of the hemoglobin J h within the cell may alter the movement or distribu- tion of other proteins in the cell membrane. "And the reason for the stickiness," he explained, "may be that the altered membrane proteins act as receptors to bind to the lining of the blood vessel." 01 Samuel R. Rea, the ex- ecutive director of Goodwill Industries of Fort Worth, has made an urgent appeal for donations of used goods clothing and household it- ems. The facility, located at 1701 E. Lancaster, re- stores or cleans donated material prior to resale in its five stores. Funds rais- ed are used to provide re- habilitation services to dis- abled and handicapped people. In making his appeal, Rea noted that the require- ments for inexpensive merchandise, especially clothing for schoolage-child- ren, had increased signifi- cantly with the current economic downturn. N P [. :.,.. on Rezoning i. .F. .1..:g "Those donating mater- ials receive a tax deduction and have the satisfaction of knowing the money raised stays in the local commu- nity to solve local prob- lems," Mr. Rea added. Goodwill Industries, an international movement, has functioned for 80 years to provide job training and services to disabled people and other individuals with special needs. The port Worth Goodwill has oper- ated locally for 33 years and, presently, is serving 200 clients with 50 pro- fessional staff. "Graduates of Goodwill programs be- come wage earners. They stop being tax users and MMMMMMEMENEEMMUMM NOTICE Public Hearing on Rezoning City of Kennedale become tax payers. They are able to lead fuller lives, and to contribute to our community. Rut, the com- munity must help through donations of materials." While there is a contin- uing need for collections, the special effort will last through August and Sept- ember when the need is especially urgent.
