of Osteopathic Medicine's
anatomy department this
month.
Dr. Wise, former acting
chairman of anatomy at the
University of Miami School
of Medicine, has held ma-
jor grants from the ration-
al Institutes of health to
study sickled cells and
aged red blood cell mem-
branes.
The Colorado native says
his research has :found that
the membranes around the
red blood cells of a person
with sickle cell anemia are
"stickier" than normal,
enabling the cells to ad-
here to the lining of blood
vessels and block the ,flow
of other red blood cells
carrying oxygen to various
parts of the body.
"In the past, we thought
it was the sickle shape of
the cells that was the
problem, that the shape

flowing smoothly so that
they blocked the vessel,"
he said. "Apparently the
shape has nothing to do
with it. We have found that
the normally shaped cells
in a sickle cell patient are
sticky, too." ,
And apparently the stick-
ier the cells the more
severe the disease. Red
blood cells in patients with
severe forms of sickle cell
anemia are much more ad-
herent than those in person
with milder forms of the
disease.
Sickle cell anemia is a
hereditary disease that oc-
curs almost exclusively in
blacks. It strikes one in 500
black Americans, and one
black American in 12 will
be a carrier. Depending on
where it is, the blockage of
small blood vessels by the
diseased cells leads to
swelling and pain in joints,
severe pain in the abdo-
men, stroke or even death.
Dr. Wise is searching for
the reason that sickle cells

sed by a mutation in the
hemoglobin, the oxygen
carrier in the red blood
cell. Hemoglobin is a pro-
tein made of long chains of

for glutamic acid," Dr.
Wise said). And the nor-
mally liquid hemoglobin
becomes a gel under low
oxygen tension, distorting
the shape of the cell.

for donations of used goods
clothing and household it-

its five stores. Funds rais-
ed are used to provide re-
habilitation services to dis-
abled and handicapped
people.
In making his appeal, Rea
noted that the require-
ments for inexpensive
merchandise, especially

severe pain in the abdo-
men, stroke or even death.

suspects the change in the
cellular membrane is cau-
sed by a mutation in the
hemoglobin, the oxygen
carrier in the red blood
cell. Hemoglobin is a pro-
tein made of long chains of
amino acids. A single
change takes place in a
chain ( "an amino acid
called valine is substituted
for glutamic acid," Dr.
Wise said). And the nor-
mally liquid hemoglobin
becomes a gel under low
oxygen tension, distorting
the shape of the cell.
The new TC ®M chairman
said that the abnormal
shape of the hemoglobin

the movement or distribu-
tion of other proteins in the
cell membrane. "And the
reason for the stickiness,"
he explained, "may be
that the altered membrane
proteins act as receptors to
bind to the lining of the
blood vessel."

Samuel R. Rea, the ex-
ecutive director of Goodwill
Industries of Fort Worth,
has made an urgent appeal
for donations of used goods
clothing and household it-
ems. The facility, located
at 1701 E. Lancaster, re-
stores or cleans donated
material prior to resale in
its five stores. Funds rais-
ed are used to provide re-
habilitation services to dis-
abled and handicapped
people.
In making his appeal, Rea
noted that the require-
ments for inexpensive
merchandise, especially
clothing for schoolage-child-
ren, had increased signifi-
cantly with the current
economic downturn.
